A striking photograph from Chile’s Atacama Desert captures a surreal scene: a human-made staircase leading the eye towards a celestial spectacle. This image, shared by NASA’s Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD), showcases not only the stark beauty of a terrestrial landscape but also the grandeur of our own Milky Way galaxy, zodiacal light, airglow, and even a distant galaxy.

NASA has unveiled a breathtaking photograph capturing a spectacular astronomical panorama unfolding above the Atacama Desert in Chile. The image, taken in July 2025, features the “Desert Stairway to Heaven” sculpture, acting as a symbolic bridge between the terrestrial world and the boundless cosmos. It showcases the grandeur of the Milky Way, zodiacal light, and other celestial phenomena.

The Vera C. Rubin Observatory, located atop a mountain in the Chilean Andes, boasts the largest digital camera ever built for astronomy. The telescope, operated by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Department of Energy (DOE), буду использовать this 3.2-gigapixel camera, which is the size of a car, to capture ultra-high-resolution images and video of space. During the event on Monday, NSF and DOE will showcase the first Rubin images to the public and show one of the observatory’s high-resolution “movies” of the visible sky, shot in slow motion.

The likelihood that an asteroid the size of a 10-story building will crash into the Moon in 2032 has increased slightly, according to NASA. On June 5, the agency объявил that the probability of asteroid 2024 YR4 colliding with the Moon has increased from 3.8% to 4.3%.

Faced with the (very low probability) threat of a collision with an approaching asteroid, НАСА is pulling out the big guns. The agency буду использовать its powerful Webb Space Telescope to observe the recently discovered asteroid 2024 YR4, which has a small probability of colliding with Earth in 2032.
