New deep-sky observations of the iconic Sombrero Galaxy (M104) have unveiled surprising details about its violent past, revealing intricate tidal streams and a luminous halo that suggest a history of galactic collisions and mergers. This revelation, made possible by an extended exposure from ground-based telescopes, paints a new picture of a galaxy not just defined by its striking dust lane, but by a turbulent cosmic history stretching back billions of years.

Astronomers peering into a deep image of the M104 galaxy, commonly known as the Sombrero Galaxy, have made a remarkable discovery. Hidden behind its familiar hat-like appearance is a history of cosmic collisions and mergers, evidenced by faint structures resembling ‘tidal streams’.
